DANILEVSKY Nikolay Yakovlevich (1822-85), philosopher, sociologist, and naturalist promoted to Actual Civil Counsellor in 1868. He graduated from Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum in 1842 and was an irregular student at the faculty of physics and mathematics of Petersburg University in 1843-47. For his engagement in M. V. Petrashevsky's circle, he was arrested in 1849 and exiled to Vologda and, then, Samara. He served in the Agricultural Department of the State Property Ministry from 1857. Between 1853 and 1869, he participated in a number of scientific expeditions led by Member of the Academy K. M. Ber in order to study Russia's water resources. Living in Crimea from the late 1860s, he was the director of Nikitsky Botanical Garden in 1879-80. The ideologist of pan-Slavism, Danilevsky published his major work, Russia and Europe, in Zarya journal in 1869 and as a separate publication in 1871 where he developed his theory of cultural and historical types, thus, forestalling the historiosophical concepts of O. Spengler and A. Toynbee. In his Darwinism, volume one published in two parts after his death in 1885, Danilevsky attacked Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. He lived at 9 Kronverksky Avenue in 1860s.
