SHCHERBATSKOY Fedor Ippolitovich (1866-1942), Scholar in Eastern Studies, Sanskritist, Indianist, Tibetologist, Buddhologist, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1918), Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1925). Graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University (1889). Held a professorship at St. Petersburg (Leningrad) University in 1901-30, took up the post of director of the Institute of Buddhist Culture in 1928, working in this capacity through 1930. Shcherbatskoy headed the Indo-Tibetan studies in the Institute of Oriental Studies (1930-42). In 1941, he was evacuated. He wrote on Buddhist logic and philosophy, published and brought to the attention of the scholarly community a significant number of written monuments in Sanskrit and Tibetan languages. Together with S.F. Oldenburg he founded in 1897 Bibliotheca Buddhica, an international scientific publishing project. He was also the founder of St. Petersburg (Leningrad) school of Buddhology. Shcherbatskoy authored over 60 works (including six monographs), and was a member of many academic societies (including foreign institutions). In the 1920-30s, he lived at 5 Universitetskaya Embankment.
