PUMPYANSKY Lev Vasilievich [before conversion to Orthodoxy (1911) - Pumpyan Leib Meerovich] (1891-1940, Leningrad), literary critic. In 1912-16, studied at the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Petersburg (Petrograd) University. Entered military service, not finishing the University programme. In 1920, returned in Petrograd to settle there. Lectured at former Tenishevsky School and the Free Philosophical Association participated in the work of the 18th Century Russian Literature Studies Department in the Institute of Russian Literature; served as professor of Leningrad Conservatory (1934) and professor of Leningrad State University (1936). Along with other representatives of Nevel Philosophical School, Pumpyansky was one of M.M. Bakhtin's disciples. Some traits of Pumpyansky were given to the character of Teptelkin in the novel by K.K. Vaginov, The Goat-Song. In November 1928, Pumpyansky was temporarily arrested in the case of A.A. Meyer's Resurrection religious circle. Pumpyansky authored an original conception of the development of Russian literature in 18th – 20th centuries in the context of European civilisation and culture. Lived at 62 Furshtatskaya Street. Buried at the cemetery in 9 January Victims Memorial Cemetery.
