LINNIK Yury Vladimirovich (1915-72, Leningrad), mathematician, member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964), Hero of Socialist Labour (1969). The son of V.P. Linnik. Graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics of Leningrad State University (1938), and taught there, becoming Professor in 1944. Since 1940, Linnik worked at the Leningrad Department of the Institute of Mathematics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Linnik took part in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-40. In 1941, volunteered for the army, fought on the Pulkovo Heights (until 1942). In 1942-44, lectured at Mozhaysky Air Force Academy, in 1946-48 - in Leningrad Polytechnic Institute. His major research was in the field of analytical number theory, probability theory and mathematical statistics. Linnik received the Lenin Prize (1970) and the Stalin Prize (1947). Lived at 61 Lesnoy Avenue, since 1966 - at 9 Toreza Avenue. Buried in Komarovskoe Cemetery.
