KONDAKOV Nikodim Pavlovich (1844-1925), archaeologist, art historian, corresponding member of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1892), member of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1898), full member of the Academy of Arts (1893). Graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University in 1865 to assume teaching positions at a number of higher schools. Held a professorship at Novorossiysk University since 1877. Lived in St. Petersburg since 1888, where he worked as Professor of St. Petersburg University (1888-96) and senior curator of the Hermitage (1888-93). In 1917, moved to Yalta. In 1920, emigrated (together with I.A. Bunin) to Constantinople. In 1920-22, Kondakov served as professor of Sophia University, and was elected full member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1920), member of many scientific societies. In 1922-25, held a professorship at Charles University in Prague, where he gathered a circle of young scientists, who became known after his death as the Seminarium Kondakovianum (reorganised in 1931 as Kondakov Archaeological Institute). Kondakov is credited as the first scholar ever to study Byzantine Art History and as originator of iconographic analysis. Lived at 15 Liteiny Avenue.
