VINOGRADOV Viktor Vladimirovich (1894/95-1969), philologist, Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946), member of many foreign academies. In 1918, he concurrently graduated from the Institute of History and Philology and Archaeological Institute of Petrograd. In the 1920s, Vinogradov lectured at Petrograd University (appointed professor in 1920), Institute for the History of Arts, Institute of Language and Thinking and Archaeological Institute. Vinogradov's scientific methodology was shaped in his works of the late 1910s - 1920s (devoted mainly to problems of historical phonetics and lexicology, historical poetics and stylistics; the majority of his papers were published in Petrograd and Leningrad), numerous lectures and reports in scientific institutions of the city. Vinogradov is ranked among the 20th century’s most prominent experts in Russian philology. In 1930, Vinogradov moved to Moscow. In 1945-47, he chaired the Department of the Russian Language on the Faculty of Philology of Leningrad State University; in 1968, he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Historical Poetics and Stylistics in Pushkin Institute of Russian Literature (after Vinogradov's death, his memorial study library was opened at the Institute). He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1951.
