STARTSEV Vitaly Ivanovich (1931, Leningrad - 2000, St. Petersburg) historian, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Education (1992), Ph.D. in History (1973). Startsev graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Leningrad State University in 1954. In 1955-59, he worked at the State Archives of the October Revolution and Development of Socialism, of which he became Deputy Director in 1958. In 1959, Startsev entered the post-graduate studies at the Leningrad Department of the History Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and worked at the History Institute in 1961-84. In 1984-98, he was Chairman of the Department of USSR History at the Leningrad Herzen Pedagogical Institute (today the Russian State Herzen Pedagogical University). He also taught here part-time from 1965. He was a professor from 1982. In 1998-2000, Startsev was a professor at the St. Petersburg Humanitarian University of Trade Unions and at the Faculty of Psychology at the St. Petersburg State University for the last months of his life. He wrote and published numerous works on the problems of political history of Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. His works deal with the February Revolution and the October Revolution of 1917, and with political influence of Freemasons in Russia. He established and was the head of the International Association of Historical Psychology in 1997. Startsev was a broadcaster on St. Petersburg Radio's Historical Club from 1993. He produced a number of radio shows for the St. Petersburg Television and Radio Committee, including the series Paradoxes of History in 1997-98. He lived at 7/4 Posadskaya Street from 1978, and was buried at Krasnenkoe Cemetery.
