SHOKALSKY Yuly Mikhailovich (1856, St. Petersburg - 1940, Leningrad), geographer, corresponding member and honorary Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1923 and 1939, respectively, honoured worker of Science of Russia in 1928, and Hero of Labour in 1925. He left the Naval School in 1877 and graduated from the Nicholas Naval Academy in 1880 where he worked as a professor from 1910 to 1930. Working at the Leningrad State University from 1919, he was promoted to Professor in 1925 and founded a department of cartography in 1928. He was the director of the State Institute of Cartography in 1925-31. He was a full member of the Russian Geographical Society from 1882 and the president and honorary president of the Geographical Society of the USSR in 1917-31 and from 1931, respectively. He wrote works on oceanography, cartography, and hydrography. He lived at 27 Torgovaya Street (today, Soyuza Pechatnikov Street) from 1908 (memorial plaque). Buried at Literatorskie Mostki.
