FAVORSKY Alexey Evgrafovich (1860-1945), chemist, member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929), Hero of Socialist Labour (1945). He graduated from the department of natural science of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of St. Petersburg University in 1882 and remained to work at the same institution. In 1896, he was promoted to professor. He also taught at the Technological Institute (1897-1909, 1922-30; 26/49 Moskovsky Avenue; memorial plaque), Higher Women's Courses (Bestuzhev Courses) and other higher educational establishments of the city. In 1919, he also gained a position at the Institute of Applied Chemistry. From 1934 to 1937, Favorsky headed the Institute of Organic Chemistry in Moscow. His major works were on unsaturated organic compounds. He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1941. Favorsky lived at 7 Universitetskaya Embankment since the 1890s and was buried at Volkovskoe Orthodox cemetery.
