Pypin A.N., (1833-1904), literary historian

PYPIN Alexander Nikolaevich (1833-1904), specialist in study of literature, ethnographer, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1898). He was a cousin of N.G. Chernyshevsky. In 1853, Pypin graduated from the faculty of history and philology of St. Petersburg University. Afterwards he contributed to the Sovremennik journal (1863-66) and to the Vestnik Evropy journal (from 1867). In 1860-61, he held a professorship at St. Petersburg University. He left works on the history of Russian literature, evolution of Russian social ideas (including freemasonry), ethnography and Slavic studies. He lived at 41 Second Line of Vasilievsky Island from 1904 and was buried at Novodevichye cemetery.
