PRZHEVALSKY Nikolay Mikhailovich (1839-1888), geographer, major general (1886), member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1878), honorary citizen of St. Petersburg (1880). He graduated from the Academy of the General Staff in 1863. He explored Central Asia and organised five expeditions there (1870-88), in the course of which he gathered numerous zoological, botanical and mineral collections. A considerable part of his findings was included in the collections of the Zoological Museum of the Academy of Sciences. A member of the Russian Geographic Society from 1864. From 1881 to 1887, he lived at 6 Stolyarny Lane (memorial plaque). In 1892, a monument to Przhevalsky was set in the Alexandrovsky Garden (sculptors I.N. Schroder, R.I. Runeberg, the author of the project plan A.A. Bilderling). To commemorate the name and work of Przhevalsky, the Russian Geographic Society instituted the Przhevalsky Prize in 1891 and Major Silver Medal in 1892; in 1946, Przhevalsky Memorial Golden Medal was established. His name was given to a number of geographic areas and points, species of animals and plants. In St. Petersburg, Stolyarny Lane bore the name of Przhevalsky from 1950 to 1992.
