PALLAS Peter Simon (1741-1811), naturalist and traveller, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1767). A native of Germany, he did his studies in Germany, Great Britain and Holland. From 1768 to 1774, he headed the expedition of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, exploring southern Russia and western Siberia. Pallas conducted research into geology, botany and zoology. In the course of his investigations he discovered and described a large number of new species of plants and animals. In 1793, he left for Crimea, before returning to his native land.
