LYAPUNOV Alexander Mikhailovich (1857-1918), mathematician and mechanic, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1901). Graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the University of St. Petersburg in 1880, taught at the University of Kharkov from 1885 to 1902 (appointed professor in 1892). Upon returning to St. Petersburg (Petrograd) in 1902, he assumed a post at the Academy of Sciences. In 1917, he went to Odessa. His work focused on a theory on the stability of motion of mechanical systems, a model theory for the stability of uniform turbulent liquid, and various issues in mathematics related to physics and probability theory. In 1969, the Academy of Sciences of the USSR instituted the Lyapunov Memorial Golden Medal. He lived at 1/2 Leytenanta Schmidta Embankment (memorial plaque installed).
