Litke F.P. (1797-1882), navigator and geographer

LITKE Fedor Petrovich (1797 - 1882, St. Petersburg), Count (1866), navigator and geographer, explorer of the Arctic, Admiral (1855), Associate Member (1829), Honorary Fellow (1855) and eventually President (1864) of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. His Navy service began in 1813. From 1826 to 1829, he commanded a round-the-world journey on board the Senyavin sloop. In 1846, he became Chair of the Nautical Scientific Committee. From 1853 to 1857, he was the military governor of Kronstadt. A founding member (1845) and vice-president (1845-50, 1857-72) of the Russian Geographic Society. A member of State Assembly starting from 1855. In 1873, the Russian Geographic Society established the Count Litke Golden Medal to celebrate his achievements. He lived at 38 Fontanka River Embankment, and in the Winter Palace (1835-48). He was buried at the Volkovskoe Lutheran Cemetery. Litke's name was given to a number of geographic areas.
