LEONTYEV Vasily Vasilievich (1906-1999) (also known as Wassily Leontief), economist, PhD in Economics (1928), Foreign Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1988), Honorary Doctor of the State Leningrad University (1990). Brought to St. Petersburg soon after his birth in 1906. Graduated from the Socio-Economic Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Petrograd in 1924. In 1925, he became a research fellow at the Leningrad Institute of National Economy. Starting in 1922, he was repeatedly arrested on charges of anti-Soviet work. Finally, in 1925, he emigrated to Germany. From 1928 to 1931, he taught at the Institute of World Economics connected with Keil University. In 1931, he settled in the USA, where he taught at Harvard University and New York University. From 1942 to 1945, he managed the Russian Economic Strategic Services Unit in Washington. His major work lies in the development of methods for structuring input-output economics and econometrics. In 1973, Leontyev won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics. Three years later he founded the Institute of Economic Analysis associated with New York University, which he headed until 1985. In 1991 he established the Leontyev Centre in St. Petersburg. Leontyev lived at 43 Zhdanovskaya Street from 1906 to 1925.
