LEBEDEV Sergey Vasilievich (1874-1934), chemist, member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1932). Graduated from the Department of Natural Science of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the University of St. Petersburg in 1900. First worked at the St. Petersburg Lipids Factory, then took a series of university positions, starting with the Institute for Railroad Engineering (1900-02). Then he worked at the University of St. Petersburg (1902-04 and 1906-16), held a professorship at the Institute of Psychoneurology (from 1913), taught at the Women's Pedagogical Institute (from 1915), Academy for Military Medicine at 1 Vyborgskaya Embankment (from 1916, memorial plaque installed). Lebedev was also in charge of laboratories he organized at the State Leningrad University (from 1925), and at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (from 1934). In 1932, he also became Chair of the Leningrad Technological Institute at 26 Moskovsky Avenue; (memorial plaque installed). His major research work concentrated on unsaturated hydrocarbons. He was the first to form synthetic butadiene rubber. In 1926-28, his work was focused on developing the first industrial method for producing synthetic rubber. This method was put into practice in 1932. Lebedev's name was given to the Institute for Synthetic Rubber, where a monument (sculptor M.G. Manizer), a Memorial Study Room, and a memorial plaque have been erected. Buried at the Necropolis of Artists. In 1949, a street was named Akademika Lebedeva Street (former Nizhegorodskaya Street), and house No. 10G, where Lebedev lived from 1924 to 1934, bears a memorial plaque.
