LAPPO-DANILEVSKY Alexander Sergeevich (1863-1919, Petrograd), historian, archaeograph, sociologist, Fellow of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1899). Came to St. Petersburg in 1882. Graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of St. Petersburg in 1886. He became a contracted lecturer at the University of St. Petersburg in 1890, and an associate professor in 1918. Many important St. Petersburg historians took part in Lappo-Danilevsky's seminars on the politics of private action and social and historical science theory. He also taught at the St. Petersburg Historical and Philological Institute (1891-1905) and the Tenishev School. He worked as secretary (1890-95) and chairman (from 1903) of the Department of Russian History of the Historical Society connected to the University of St. Petersburg. He figured prominently in the activity of the Archaeographic Commission, which he joined in 1894, was elected by the Academy of Sciences and Universities to be a member of the State Assembly (1906), and was a member of the Russian Historical Society (from 1915). In 1916, the University of Cambridge made him an Honorary Doctor of Law. Lappo-Danilevsky was a founder and chairman of the Russian Sociological Society (from 1916). In 1917, he also became Chair of the League of Russian Archives Workers. An outstanding organizer, he presided over numerous commissions of the Academy of Sciences, as well as over the Executive Committee for the Organisation of the International Historical Congress in Petrograd in 1918, which didn't take place. His most influential works were dedicated to the socio-economic, political and cultural history of 15th-18th centuries Russia, historic methodology, study of primary sources, and the history of science. He also published many primary sources. In the 1900-10s, he lived in the House of Academics (present-day 1/2 Leytenanta Shmidta Embankment). He was buried at the Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery (grave not preserved).
