Krasheninnikov S.P., (1711-1755), geographer

KRASHENINNIKOV Stepan Petrovich (1713, according to the other data, 1711 - 1755, St. Petersburg), geographer, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1750). Studied at the Slavonic-Greek-Latin Academy in Moscow from 1724 to 1732, and then continued his study for the next two years at the Academic University in St. Petersburg. From 1733 to 1743, he took part in the second expedition to Kamchatka, exploring Siberia as well. In 1743, he came back to St. Petersburg, becoming President of the Academic University five years later. His main written work, entitled Description of the Land of Kamchatka (1756), was the first Russian scientific monograph. He was buried at the cemetery near the Holy Annunciation Church on Vasilievsky Island; in 1988 his remains were moved to the Lazarevskoe Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. His name was given to a cape and a mountain in the Kamchatka region, as well as a neighbouring island.
