KOSTENKO Mikhail Polievktovich (1889-1976, Leningrad), electrical engineer, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953), Hero of Socialist Labour (1969). He graduated from Petrograd Polytechnic Institute (1918), and later taught there. In 1930, he was appointed professor. Kostenko participated in planning and implementing the Electrification Of Russia Program. In 1955-65, he was Director of the Institute Of Electromechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (18 Palace Embankment, commemorative plaque). His main works dealt with design of generators and turbogenerators. He was awarded Stalin Prizes (1947, 1951), and the Lenin Prize (1958). He was buried in Bogoslovskoe Cemetery. A commemorative plaque has been placed on the house where Kostenko lived in 1919-76 (21а Dobrolyubova Avenue).
