KONOVALOV Dmitry Petrovich (1856-1929, Leningrad), chemist, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1923) and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1925). Graduated from the St. Petersburg Mining Institute in 1878. Afterwards, he audited classes at the University of St. Petersburg, where he also taught positions from 1882 to 1907, becoming a professor in 1886. He was President of the St. Petersburg Mining Institute (1903-1905), Director of the Mining Department (1907-08), Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce (1908-1915). From 1916 to 1918, he held a professorship at the Petrograd Technological Institute, a post he resumed after 1922. From 1919 to 1922, Konovalov lived and worked in Ukraine. Upon his return to Petrograd in 1922, he took up presidency over the Central Board of Weights and Measures. He was repeatedly elected President of the Russian Physics and Chemistry Society. His main work is focused on issues of kinetic chemistry and process chemistry. His scientific contribution also includes two laws derived in 1881-84, which were named after him. From 1922 on, he resided at 19 Mezhdunarodny Avenue (present-day Moskovsky Avenue). He was buried at the Novodevichye Cemetery.
