KARPINSKY Alexander Petrovich (1846/47-1936), geologist, Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1886), of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1917), and of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1925). In 1916 he was elected Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences, becoming the first elected President of this institution in 1917. Graduated from the St. Petersburg Mining Institute in 1866 (memorial plaque installed), continuing on there as a post-graduate student in 1869, and being promoted to professor in 1877-96. A founding member of the Geological Committee (1882), which he directed from 1885 to 1903, when he was appointed its honorary director, a post he held until 1929. In 1899 he also took on presidency of the Mineralogical Society. In 1915, Karpinsky participated in the Commission for the Study of Natural Production Capacity of Russia. Moved to Moscow in 1935. Karpinsky was a founder of several Russian academic schools specializing in regional geology, geological mapping and tectonics, paleonthology and stratigraphy, petrography, mining geology and non-metallic mining geology. The house where Karpinsky lived from 1899 to 1935 (1/2 Leytenanta Schmidta Embankment) bears a memorial plaque. In 1965 his name was attached to a new street (Karpinskogo Street) in the northern part of Leningrad. His name was also given to the Geological Institute.
