INOSTRANTSEV Alexander Alexandrovich (1843, Farforovoe Village, close to St. Petersburg -1919, Petrograd), geologist, Corresponding Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1901) and the Russian Academy of Sciences (1917). Graduated from the Science Department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Petersburg University (1867), where he lectured from 1868 (Professor since 1873). Established the Geological Museum, as well as the first Geology Department in Russia. Also lectured at a number of other St. Petersburg (Petrograd) institutes of higher education. Wrote studies on geology, petrography, palaeontology, hydrogeology, and archaeology. Studied the geologic structure of Northern Russia, including the St. Petersburg region, and worked on the problem of supplying drinking water to St. Petersburg. Chairman of the Russian Anthropological Society (from 1888), President of the Petersburg Society of Naturalists (from 1900). Lived at 18/2 Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island from 1891. Buried at the Smolenskoe Lutheran Cemetery. The gulf of Novaya Zemlya and a number of fossils have been named after Inostrantsev.
