ZHEBELEV Sergey Alexandrovich (1867, St. Petersburg - 1941, Leningrad), historian, Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1927). Graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Petersburg University in 1890. From 1891, lectured at the Central School for Technical Drawing; in 1894, assumed teaching positions at the Higher Art School of the Academy of Arts, Petersburg University (1899; held a professorship since 1904), the History and Philology Institute, and at the Women's Higher (Bestuzhev) Courses. Worked as an editor in the classics department of the Journal of People's Education Ministry (1903-18). Became Dean of the Faculty of History and Philology of Petrograd University in 1918-19, and rector of the university in July - September 1919. Served as Chairman of the Hermitage Soviet. In 1923, Zhebelev was elected Vice-Chairman of the State Academy of the History of Material Culture, a post he held until 1928. As a research officer at the Leningrad Department of the Institute of the History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Zhebelev headed the study of ancient history. In 1941 he served as Chairman of the Scientific Institutions of the Besieged Leningrad Administration Commission of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Died of exhaustion on 28 December. His major works are devoted to the history of ancient Greece and the Northern regions of the Black Sea in ancient times. In the 1920-30s, he lived at 7 Forth Line of Vasilievsky Island. Buried at Literatorskie Mostky.
