BAYKOV Alexander Alexandrovich (1870-1946) was metallurgist, chemist, academician (1932) and Vice-President (1942-46) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of St. Petersburg University (1893). From 1903, he was professor of St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute. He worked in Leningrad till 1943. Baykov is the author of works on the theory of metallurgical processes, metal industry and use of refractory bricks and cements. He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1943. Akademika Baykova Street was named after him in 1975. There are commemorative plaques on the house where he lived in 1930-42 (10 Liteiny Avenue) and on the building of the Department of Chemistry of Polytechnic University (29 Politekhnicheskaya Street).
