POLYTECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University situated at 29 Politekhnicheskaya Street. It was founded as the Polytechnical Institute in 1899, named after Peter the Great in 1910-17, and renamed as the Kalinin Leningrad Polytechnical Institute in 1923 with thirteen independent institutes established by 1930, adopting the same institutional structure: the Hydraulic Engineering Institute, Boiler and Turbine Training Institute, Machine Building Institute, Metallurgical Institute, Electromechanical Institute, Engineering Academy and Physical and Mechanical Institute, Shipbuilding Institute, Institute for the Mechanisation of Social Agriculture, Institute of Finance and Economics, Institute of Engineering and Economics, Institute of Soviet Trade, Planning Institute, and Moscow Institute of Transport and Economics. The first six technical institutes were united into the Leningrad Industrial Institute on the old site in 1934, renamed again as the Leningrad Polytechnical Institute in 1940. It received the status of a university in 1990 and its present-day name in 2002. Among its founders were S. Y. Witte, V. I. Kovalevsky, D. I. Mendeleev, A. N. Krylov, A. S. Popov and D. K. Chernov. Among the first teachers were: director A. G. Gagarin, deans A. S. Posnikov, K. P. Boklevsky, N. A. Menshutkin, and M. A. Chatelaine, as well as A. P. Alexandrov, A. A. Baykov, A. F. Ioffe, P. L. Kapitsa, I. K. Kikoin, M. V. Kirpichev, B. P. Konstantinov, N. S. Kurnakov, I. V. Kurchatov, F. Y. Levinson-Lessing, P. I. Lukirsky, I. V. Meshchersky, N. N. Pavlovsky, N. N. Semenov, and D. V. Skobeltsyn. There were the following departments in 2002: engineering and construction, electromechanics, power machine building, mechanical machine building, material technology and research, economics and management, technical cybernetics, physics and mechanics, physics and engineering, radio physics, medical physics and bioengineering, humanities, open and distance education, and external training. The university has branches in six regions of the Russian Federation. In St. Petersburg, there are the following institutes attached to the university: Institute of Robotics and Technical Cybernetics, Institute of Intelligent Systems and Technologies, Institute for the Military Technical Education and Security, Institute of International Education Programs, Institute of Innovation, and International Advanced Management School. The university develops individual plans and programs for training multiskilled professionals in various fields of economy, economic management, education and research work. The university buildings including laboratories and residential buildings were constructed by architect E. F. Wirrich et al. in 1899-1902. New buildings were erected around between 1960 and 2000.
