Stebut's Agricultural Courses for Women

STEBUT'S AGRICULTURAL COURSES FOR WOMEN, advanced courses established by the Society for the Encouragement of Women's Agricultural Education in 1904. They were named after I. M. Stebut, the founder of the courses. Priority was given to graduates of higher education institutions. Students had to pay for their education and the course took four years. There were two departments: agronomy and forestry. Students practised teaching in the Botanical Garden and estates of Novgorod, Pskov, and Ryazan provinces. Among the teachers were S. V. Averintsev, B. D. Brutskus, A. I. Bukovetsky, S. P. Kravkov, E. F. Liskun, N. K. Nedokuchaev, M. N. Rimsky-Korsakov, K. I. Scriabin, and V. N. Sukachev. The courses were originally held at 35 Mokhovaya Street and moved to a special building at 2 Novaya Street (today, Bobruyskaya Street), Lesnoy, in 1909 (the building reconstructed by architect A. I. Dietrich). The courses were transformed into an institute in 1918, and joined the Agricultural Institute in 1922 (see under Agrarian University).
