ALARCHIN COURSES, a women's educational institution opened by teacher I. I. Paulson in 1869 to provide training for women to study at higher educational institutions. They were taught Russian language, geometry, algebra, physics, pedagogy, botany, zoology, and geography. The courses were held in the Fifth Gymnasium by Alarchin Bridge (hence the name). Courses were paid for by fees, private donations, and proceeds from concert activities. The courses were strictly controlled by the authorities. They were closed in the mid-1870s with the analogous Vladimirskie Courses established in St. Petersburg simultaneously.
