SOCIETY OF MILITARY ENTHUSIASTS, a military science society. It was founded in 1898 on the basis of a military science circle established in Petersburg Garrison in the late 1896 by a group of officers with Major General E. M. Bibikov at the head. The society was to popularise the military science among Army and Navy officers and to study military theory and history. It was situated in the Officers' Assembly of the Army and Navy at 20 Liteiny Avenue, now accommodating the House of Officers. It comprised of a number of departments such as departments of military history, military psychology, shooting and aeronautics. It had branches in Warsaw, Riga, Minsk, Tiflis, and other cities. It published Herald in 1899-1915 and a journal, Obshchestvo Revniteley Voennykh Znany (The Society of Military Enthusiasts), in 1906-13. It was dissolved after the beginning of World War I of 1914-18.
