MENDELEEV METROLOGY INSTITUTE, situated at 19 Moskovsky Avenue. It originates from the Depot of Standard Weights and Measures founded in 1842 and reorganised into the Head Office of Weights and Measures in 1893 and the All-Union Institute of Metrology and Standards in 1931. The institute was named after D. I. Mendeleev in 1934. It was then reorganised in the All-Union Research Institute of Metrology in 1945 and gained the status of a governmental scientific centre in 1994. One of the largest centres of theoretical and practical metrology in the world, the institute is in charge of ensuring uniform measurement in Russia and efficiency of the state metrological infrastructure. The institute has developed state standards, unique high-precision plants, and reference standards for various applications in science and engineering. A number of scientists worked at the institute at various times including B. S. Jacoby, D. P. Konovalov, and M. A. Chatelaine. The institute has a branch in Lomonosov and a nonmagnetic station in the settlement of Kavgolovo. There is a monument to Mendeleev sculpted by I. Y. Ginzburg and installed in front of the main institute building in 1932.
