ST MYRON'S CHURCH, Church of the Holy Martyr Myron, located at 99 Obvodny Canal Embankment. The church of the Life Guards Chasseur Regiment, constructed in 1849-55 (architect K. A. Ton) in the Russian Byzantine style. It could accommodate up to 3,000 people. The building was crowned with five hipped-roof domes, reminiscent of the Holy Annunciation Church of the Cavalry Life Guards Regiment. The 70 meters high three-tier belfry dominated the surrounding buildings. The iconostasis was made by carver E. Skvortsov, icons were painted by artists M. I. Scotti, P. M. Shamshin, A. T. Markov and E. G. Solntsev, interior painting – by artists F. S. Zavyalov and A. T. Markov. In 1889, the St. Nicholas Chapel was arranged under the altar and in 1916 a crypt was added for officers of the regiment, who were killed in action during World War I (architect E. N. Grushevsky). The church housed numerous precious icons and silver church plates; there were regimental flags and brass memorial plaques with the names of the regiment’s officers, fallen in battles on the walls. Uniforms of the most august patrons of the regiment were displayed in glass cases. New front doors, made from bronze were cast in 1905-06, according to the design of E. A. Evseev. In 1930, St. Myron's Church was closed down, shortly afterwards blown up and demolished for bricks (at present the site is neglected).
