IGNATY (born Ivan Vasilievich Malyshev) (1811-1897, Holy Trinity and St. Sergius Hermitage), Archimandrite. In 1823, Ignaty was brought to St. Petersburg where he worked as an errand-boy, then as a salesclerk. In 1836, he became a lay-brother of Archimandrite Ignaty (Bryanchaninov) at the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius Hermitage. In 1842, he took monastic vows under the name of Ignaty. In 1844, he was ordained into the priesthood and served as Archimandrite and Prior of the monastery from 1857 until his death. At these posts he followed the spiritual traditions of his mentor. Ignaty studied Old Russian architecture and directed construction works at the monastery. After taking classes with artist A.G. Varnek at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, he painted icons and made frescoes at the churches of the eparchy. Architect A.A. Parland designed the Holy Resurrection Cathedral (Spas-na-Krovi) (see Holy Resurrection Cathedral) to the plans of Ignaty in1882. Ignaty was buried at the Holy Resurrection Cathedral in the Holy Trinity & St. Sergius Hermitage (his grave was not preserved).
