BRILLIANTOV Alexander Ivanovich (1867-1933), church historian, Doctor of Church History (honoris causa 1914), corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1919). After graduating from St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 1891, he taught religion at St. Petersburg city schools for a couple of years. Brilliantov was a disciple of V.V. Bolotov; after the death of the latter he held the chair of General Church History at St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 1900-18, and assumed the functions of a member of the Holy Synod Commission on the dialogue of Old Catholics with Anglicans (since 1900). Brilliantov took part in the Church Council of 1917-18. In 1920-23 he was Professor of Theological Institute in Petrograd. In 1930 Brilliantov was arrested, and died in Svir Camp. He wrote over 20 works on general church history and historiography, biographies; he also published the works of Bolotov. Brilliantov lived at 5 Khersonskaya Street.
