RULING CLERICS, members of the upper church hierarchy in the St. Petersburg Eparchy, consisting of bishops, archbishops and metropolitans. The Eparchy was known as the Eparchy of St. Petersburg and Schliesselburg (1742-70), St. Petersburg and Revel (1770-75), Novgorod and St. Petersburg (1775-99), St. Petersburg, Estonia and Vyborg (1799), Novgorod, St. Petersburg, Estonia and Vyborg (1800-03), Novgorod, St. Petersburg, Estonia and Finland (1803-65), Novgorod, St. Petersburg and Finland (1865-92), St. Petersburg and Ladoga (1892-14 and from 1991), Petrograd and Ladoga (1914-17), Petrograd and Gdov (1917-22), Leningrad (1926-27, 1933-43), Leningrad and Gdov (1928-33), Leningrad and Novgorod (1943-59, 1967-90), Leningrad and Ladoga (1959-67, 1990-91) and was led by a Bishop (1742-45), Archbishop (1745-83 and 1799-1801), and Metropolitan (1783-99 and since 1801). Traditionally, St. Petersburg ruling clerics were at the same time superiors of St. Alexander Nevsky Monastery (the monastery has been called Lavra since 1797). Since 1742, there have been 31 hierarchs in St. Petersburg (including Petrograd and Leningrad): Nikodim (Srebnitsky) (1742-45), Theodosius (Yankovsy) (1745-50), Silvestr (Kulyabka) (1750-61), Veniamin (Putsek-Grigorovich) (1761-62), Gavriil (Kremenetsky) (1762-70), Gavriil (Petrov-Shaposhnikov) (1770-99), Amvrosy (Podobedov) (1799-1818), Mikhail (Desnitsky) (1818-21), Seraphim (Glagolevsky) (1821-43), Antony (Rafalsky) (1843-48), Nikanor (Klementyevsky) (1848-56), Grigory (Postnikov) (1856-60), Isidor (Nikolsky) (1860-92), Pallady (Raev-Pisarev) (1892-98), Antony (Vadkovsky) (1898-1912), Vladimir (Bogoyavlensky) (1912-15), Pitirim (Oknov) (1915-17), Veniamin (Kazansky) (1917-22), Iosif (Petrovyh) (1926-27), Seraphim (Chichagov) (1928-33), Alexy (Simansky) (1933-45), Grigory (Chukov) (1945-55), Elevfery (Vorontsov) (1955-59), Pitirim (Sviridov) (1959-60), Gury (Yegorov) (1960-61), Pimen (Izvekov) (1961-63), Nikodim (Rotov) (1963-78), Antony (Melnikov) (1978-86), Alexy (Ridiger) (1986-90), Ioann (Snychev) (1990-95), and Vladimir (Kotlyarov) (since 1996).
