CLARK Matvey Egorovich (Matthew) (1776-1846), metallurgical engineer, Chief Hunt Master. A native of Scotland, he served as inspector at St. Petersburg Iron Foundry (today, Kirovsky Plant) in 1824 and director of Alexandrovsky Foundry (today, Proletarsky Plant) in 1826-42. Under his direction a number of sculptures were made including the Chariot of Glory by sculptors V. I. Demut-Malinovsky and S. S. Pimenov in 1829, installed on the arch of the General Headquarters building, the chariot on the pediment of Alexandrinsky Theatre sculpted by S. S. Pimenov in 1834, the horses on the Narva Triumphal Arch, sculpted by P. K. Klodt in 1833, the horses on the Moscow Triumphal Arch, sculpted by B. I. Orlovsky in 1838, etc. Clark was in charge of building Neva, one of the first Russian steamboats, and the first metal submarine in 1834. He was also in charge of reconstructing the floors of the Winter Palace after the fire of 1837. He lived in a flat that belonged to Alexandrovsky Foundry on Shlisselburgsky Road.
