WIRRICH (Wurrich) Ernest-Friedrich Franzevich (1860, St. Petersburg - after 1949), painter, architect, academician of architecture of the Academy of Arts (1908). Graduated from the Academy of Arts (1888; studied painting from 1878 and architecture from 1884). In 1888-94, he was assistant to the architect P.Y. Suzor. From 1897 - an architect of the Construction Department of the Main Administration of Untaxed Duties and State Selling of Beverages. In St. Petersburg, he constructed the building of the city Alafuzovskaya Hospital (in collaboration with Suzor, 1897-1900 and 1910), the mansions of K.F. Stemberg, painter E.K. von Lipgart, S.Y. Witte. The largest of Wirrich 's Work in the opening period of his creative work was the construction of the Polytechnic Institute Complex (1899-1902, see Polytechnic University). The crucial Work of Wirrich is the Trade House of the Guards Economic Society (1908-09, now House of Leningrad Trade). Reinforced concrete structures not only ensured the strength and lightness of the construction (he was one of the first in St. Petersburg to use hollow blocks for monolithic frameworks), but also defined the expressiveness of innovative architecture. Wirrich designed the general layout of Basseinoe Society of Apartments Proprietors residential complex (Basseinaya Street, today Nekrasova Street, 1913-1914; together with A.I. Zazersky and others), that was constructed to the strict forms of neo-romantic art nouveau - an example of a novel approach to the construction of comfortable housing estates with a developed structure of inner quarter space and brilliant compositional decisions. After October 1917, he lived and worked in the USA.
