KLENZE LEO VON (1784-1864), Bavarian architect, artist, theorist and historian of architecture, master of Eclecticism, concentrated on the Classic and Renaissance styles, Associate Member of the Academy of Fine Arts (1834). Studied at the Berlin Construction Academy and the Paris Polytechnic School. In 1808-13, he was a court architect in Kassel; from 1814, he was a court king's architect in Bavaria. In 1839, he visited St. Petersburg regarding the building of the New Hermitage (see Hermitage). He later visited Russia six more times. The construction of the New Hermitage was accomplished in 1840-51 by architects V.P. Stasov and N.E. Efimov, who followed sketches and plans by Klenze. Carefully organised floor plans and a high level of technical equipment helped bring together various styles of interior design, each of which was created to complement the exhibited works of art. From sketches by Klenze, the master G. von Hesse executed a stained-glass altar panel at St. Isaac's Cathedral (1841-44).
