Regel E. (1815-1892), landscape architect

REGEL Eduard-Avgust Ludwigovich (1814-1892), botanist, gardener, Associate Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1875). Graduated from the Gott Gymnasium (Germany) and from the University of Bonn. In 1832-1837, he studied botany at the Botanical Garden of Gottingen, and worked in gardens at Bonn and Berlin. In 1842, he was head of the Botanical Garden in Zurich, and lectured at the local university. In 1855-1892, he headed the Botanical Garden in St. Petersburg, raising it to the level of the best European gardens. He created both the garden and laboratory attached to it; he also founded the Russian Gardening Society (vice-president), and several academic journals, which he both edited and wrote for (3,101 articles). He published a number of reference works. In 1872-1874, the Admiralty garden was created under Regel's supervision. He lived on the territory of the Botanical Garden. He was buried at the Smolenskoe Lutheran Cemetery.
