TREZZINI Domenico (circa 1670-1734), Italian of Swiss descent, architect, city-planner, representative of the Petrine Baroque (Peter's the Great epoch). From 1703, lived in Russia. Kronstadt and Alexander Nevsky Lavra were laid to the plans of Trezzini. In 1706, the stone construction of Peter and Paul Fortress with the cathedral commenced. By decree of Peter the Great, he devised "sample" projects for the houses for "prosperous" and "lower order" citizens, which served for half a century as the model for city development. He also drew up the first general plan of St. Petersburg, taking due account its topography and the traditions of Russian architecture. A greater share of his activities Trezzini invested into the planning of Vasilievsky Island, in particular, the Spit ensemble. The Summer Palace of Peter the Great in the Summer Garden (see Summer Palaces) and the Twelve Collegia building are of Trezzini's design. In the 1720s, he contributed to the construction of the Main Admiralty building and the Partikulyarny Shipyard, Pochtovy (post office) Yard, naval and army hospitals. Architect M.G. Zemtsov belongs to Trezzini's progeny. Trezzini lived at 43 Second Line of Vasilievsky Island, (the building has not been preserved). Buried at the St. Sampson’s Church Cemetery (now St. Sampson's Cathedral; the grave has not survived). In 1995, a monument to the Pioneer builders of St. Petersburg was erected on the site of the church cemetery (architect V.V. Bukhaev, decorator М.М. Shemyakin).
