NIKONOV Nikolay Nikitich (1849-1918), architect, representative of the Neo-Byzantine style. From the 1860s lived in St. Petersburg. Completed his studies and traineeship at city construction sites; assisted architect I.A. Monighetti. In 1893-1906, he was commissioned as diocesan architect. A number of religious and residential buildings in St. Petersburg belong to Nikonov's authorship. Most typical motives, inherent to his works were those of Moscow-Yaroslavl architecture of the 17th century, using colour ceramics. Nikonov's own house at the 11 Kolokolnaya Street (1899-1900), the complex of buildings affiliated to the Society of propagation of religious and moral principles at the corner of the Stremyannaya and Nikolaevskaya (currently Marata Street) streets (1891-93, demolished in 1966), the town house of the Leushinsky St. John the Baptist Monastery in Basseinaya Street (now Nekrasova Street) (1893-95), Holy Virgin Intercession Church on Borovaya Street (1890-97), the Convent of St. John of Rila at Karpovka River Embankment (1900-08). Nikonov built the Kazan Church in Terioki (Zelenogorsk, 1913-14).
