Kerbedz S.V., (1810-1899), engineer

KERBEDZ Stanislav Valerianovich (1810-1899), engineer, Actual Privy Counsellor (1881), corresponding member (1851) and honorary member (1858) of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts (1850). He graduated from the College of Railway Engineers (1831), where he held a tenure as professor in 1842-49. He taught at the Major Engineering School (from 1835), at the Mining Institute (1836-49) and St. Petersburg University (1841-49). He designed (1841-42) and directed (1842-50) the construction of the first fixed bridge over the Bolshaya Neva (see Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge). From 1852, he was involved in constructing the St. Petersburg - Warsaw Railway; in 1856-57, the St. Petersburg - Peterhof Railway. From 1858, he was a member of the Head Council of Railways and Public Buildings Direction. He was a head of the consideration committee of Liteiny Bridge project (1869), and worked on the plans for the Sea Channel (1872). From 1887, he was the head of Technical Council of the Ministry of Railways. He retired in 1891 and lived in Warsaw. He research was fundamental in the field of structural mechanics.
