ZHURAVSKY Dmitry Ivanovich (1821-1891, St. Petersburg), engineer, privy counsellor (1876), conferred the Demidov Award (1855). He graduated from the Engineering Corps Institute for Transport Communications (1842). In 1842-50, he participated in research, development and construction of the St. Petersburg – Moscow Railroad. In 1851-57, he was involved with the construction of the St. Petersburg - Warsaw Railroad and the Southern railroads. In 1857-58, in collaboration with the engineer A.S. Rekhnevsky and P.P. Melnikov he replaced the wooden spire of SS Peter and Paul Cathedral with an iron one. In 1871-76, he participated in the reestablishment of the Mariinskaya water system and Ladoga canals. In 1877-84 he was Chief of the Department of Railroads of the Ministry for Transport Communications; in 1883-89 he was a member of the Ministry Council. His main works in the area of building mechanics include developing the idea of using wooden trusses with iron and adopting them for the construction of bridges over the rivers Verebyu, Volga, Volkhov etc. He was a member of the Russian Technical Society (from 1866, from 1876 he was a honourable member; in 1866-76, he was the head of its construction department). He was buried at Mitrofanyevskoe Cemetery.
