EFIMOV Nikolay Efimovich (1799-1851, St. Petersburg), architect, urban planner. From 1806 to 1821, he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts; was later involved in studying traditional Russian architecture. In 1827-40, he lived in Italy. From 1840, he was a member of the academy, since 1842, an honourable free participant, while from 1844 he was a professor of the Academy of Fine Arts. As of 1840, he was an architect for the Court department. He assisted architect V.P. Stasov in restoring the interiors of the Winter Palace after the fire of 1837, and built the New Hermitage (1840-52), adding a number of changes to the design by architect L. Klenze. In 1843-45, he planned Konnogvardeisky Boulevard, Blagoveshchenskaya Square (currently, Truda Square), Znamenskaya Square (currently, Vosstaniya Square) and the southern part of St. Isaac’s Square, where in 1844-50 he erected in Neo-Renaissance style, the building of the Ministry of State Assets (No 4), and in 1847-53, Minister House (No 13). In 1844-51, he rebuilt the building of the City Duma in this style (1-3 Dumskaya Street), the houses of Chief-of-Police (22 Bolshaya Morskaya Street), of S.O. Kitner (7 St. Isaac’s Square), of A. Yakunchikova (66 Moika River Embankment ), the Shuvalov Palace (of the Naryshkins, 21 Fontanka River Embankment ). He designed the St. Nicholas’ Edinoverie Church (1845-51, Zakharyevskaya Street, 18, has not survived) and the Holy Resurrection Church (1847-59, Kulibina Square, has not survived) in the Neobyzantine style. He devoted his last years to the creation of the ensemble of St. Mary’s Convent, having enriched the Russian-Byzantine style with elements of ancient Russian architecture. He is buried at Novodevichy Cemetery.
