Krestovsky Bridges

Categories / Architecture/Bridges

KRESTOVSKY BRIDGES, two bridges on Krestovsky Island. Malo-Krestovsky Bridge across the Krestovka River, along Dinamo Avenue joins Krestovsky and Kamenny islands. In about 1817, a pontoon bridge of boats was arranged; from about 1826-1827 a wooden five-span nogging-framed bridge was constructed (engineer P.P. Bazen). In 1940-41, it was rebuilt as a three-span bridge, with steel beams on wooden piers. In 1961-62, a new bridge was constructed (engineer Y.L. Yurkov, architect L.A. Noskov), the span of a bridge was covered using a slanting double-jointed arch from pre-stressed fabrics (of a "deer running" type). The length is 71.9 metres, the width is 13 metres. Bolshoy Krestovsky Bridge across the Malaya Nevka joins Bolshaya Zelenina Street (on the Petrograd side) and Petrogradskaya Street (Krestovsky Island). Since the mid-19th century, there was an eleven-span wooden bridge with a draw span. From 1949-51, the new bridge was constructed (engineer P.V. Andreevsky, architect L.A. Noskov), a five-span bridge with metal spans (the centre opens from two wings; the sides are a continuous, double-span, with a solid web girder). In 1956-57, concrete balustrades on piers were replaced with the granite ones; railings are cast-iron, reminiscent of the railing of Winter Canal. The length is 149.4 metres, the width is 25.5 metres.
