Torgovy Bridge

TORGOVY BRIDGE (Trade Bridge; in 1797 Sredny, Middle, Bridge), across Kryukov Canal, joining Soyuza Pechatnikov Street (former Torgovaya Street, hence the name) and Teatralnaya Square. It was built by 1783-85 as a typical three-span bridge with granite-faced rubble piers. The frame was made of wood; the side spans were beam structured, the central part was movable (the spans were replaced in 1805-10). In 1905, the wooden spans were replaced with metal beams, subsequently replaced in 1960-61 with the new ones; continuous metal beams with curved bottom chord and reinforced concrete roadway slab (engineer A.D. Gutzeit). The standard lamps with the lanterns have been restored (architect A.L. Rotach). The bridge is 26.7 metres long and 10.6 metres wide.
