Pikalov Bridge

PIKALOV BRIDGE, over Griboedov Canal, on the right embankment of Kryukov Canal. It was named after the surname of the contractor, Pikalov, who built it in 1783-1785. The three-span bridge is made of wood, with rubble piers faced with granite; its central span is movable (was replaced by a new one in the second half of the 19th century). In 1905, the framework was replaced by metal beam spans, followed by reinforced-concrete slab spans put on the same piers in 1982-1984 (engineers L.N. Sobolev, R.R. Shilov). In 1953 and 1969, four granite obelisks with torches were restored on the side curves of the piers. The torches of the bridge were reconstructed in 1993. The bridge is 25 metres long and 10.4 metres wide.
