GAZOVY BRIDGE, (Gas Bridge) spanning the Obvodny Canal, by Serpukhovskaya Street. Built after 1835 by the St. Petersburg Society of Gas Lighting for the laying of gas-pipes from the gas-factory (hence the name); a three span bridge with metal girders on a wooden frame. In 1933 a heating main was laid by the bridge from the first state electrical station. In 1946, it was opened for pedestrians. In 1984, from the downstream side of the old Gazovy Bridge was built a new single-span bridge with metal girders on a reinforced concrete abutment (the abutment is concealed beneath the embankment). Length: approximately 30.7 metres, width: 3 metres.
