A.V. Suvorov monument

A.V. SUVOROV MONUMENT, designed by sculptor M.I. Kozlovsky. The project was approved by Emperor Pavel I in January 1800, when the grand general was still alive. Originally, the monument was installed in the southern part of the Field of Mars, on the bank of the Moika River next to Mikhailovsky Castle, which carried a symbolic meaning, as well as the very components of the sculpture: an altar with bas reliefs of Faith, Love, and Hope, crowns and a triregnum are placed on the altar. A warrior wearing a cuirass and a feathered helmet (the military dress of the Cavalry Guards) serves as an image of the unshakable defender of the throne. The bronze sculpture (founder V.P. Ekimov) was first put on a marble plinth (drafted by A.N. Voronikhin) decorated with a bronze cartouche and a bas-relief depicting the genii of Glory (sculptor F.G. Gordeev). The monument was inaugurated on 5 May 1801. In 1818, according to the project by K.I. Rossi, the monument was moved closer to the Neva, and placed on the square called Suvorovskaya beside the approach to Troitsky Bridge. In 1838, the marble plinth was replaced with a granite one. The monument is 7.5 metres high. Since the Great Patriotic War, it has been restored several times.
