Rumyantsevsky Obelisk

RUMYANTSEVSKY OBELISK was erected by the order of Emperor Pavel I to commemorate the victories of Field Marshal General, Count P.A. Rumyantsev-Zadunaysky (see the Rumyantsevs) in the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-91. The obelisk is made of Serdobol granite and crowned with a bronze gilded sphere with an Imperial eagle at the top of it (architect V. Brenna). In 1799, it was initially installed on the Field of Mars, in 1818, due to the foundation of present-day Suvorovskaya Square, it was transferred by architect K.I. Rossi to Vasilievsky Island, where it was placed on the square between the Academy of Fine Arts and the 1st Cadet Corps, where Rumyantsev was educated (presently Shevchenko Square). In 1865-67, Rumyantsevsky Garden was laid out on the square.
