VERST POSTS (Milestones), road signs in the form of granite or marble obelisks; that were placed along the roads from St. Petersburg to Tsarskoe Selo and Peterhof one verst apart. The decision to mount verst posts was made in 1764; they were constructed in the workshops of St. Isaac’s Cathedral. On Tsarskoselskaya Road the works on verst posts placement were carried out in 1774-1775 (nine verst posts have survived), on Petergofskaya Road - in the 1780s. (eight verst posts have survived). On the first and on the last verst posts sundials were placed. The author of the verst posts was architect A. Rinaldi, but according to the latest information, their creator is the architect J.B. Vallin de la Mothe. The remaining verst posts were restored in the 1970s-1990s.
