SEMENOVSKAYA SQUARE, located at the intersection of Gorokhovaya Street and Fontanka River Embankment, near Semenovsky bridge. The dimensions and configuration of the bridge square consisting of two parts (rectangular on the right bank of the Fontanka River and semicircular on the left) were designed by the Commission for Stone Construction in St. Petersburg and Moscow in the 1760s (architect A.V. Kvasov). The name originates from neighbouring quarters of Semenovsky Lifeguard Regiment. The ensemble of Semenovskaya Square encompasses the house of the Yakovlevs (81 Fontanka River Embankment), constructed in the 1780s-90s in the style of strict Classicism (corner round staircase inside the building - "rotunda", the meeting place of underground groups in the late 20th century). The house of Kukanov (79 Fontanka River Embankment), symmetrical to it, was constructed in the late 18th - early 19th centuries and received a facade in the classicist style in 1831-32 (architect A.I. Melnikov). The construction of the so-called Glebov's House (90 Fontanka River Embankment) was launched in 1787; in 1798-1803, the building was redesigned and extended for the quarters of Grenadier Lifeguard Regiment (architect thought to be F.I. Volkov), later, it accommodated quarters of local troops. The west semicircle of Semenovskaya Square is enclosed with the facade of the four-storied house of Petrov (92 Fontanka River Embankment), built in the late 18th century (overbuilt later); there is an original round outbuilding (1817-22, architect I.I. Charlemagne) in its yard.
